Google Admits Citing 4chan To Spread Fake Vegas Shooter News

FACEBOOK admitted Monday that its system automatically promoted stories that falsely identified the shooter in the Las Vegas massacre.

The social network said links from Web sites such as alt-right “The Gateway Pundit” and others were posted and spread across their site Sunday night.

The stories claimed that the shooter was an “anti-Trump” Democrat and displayed pictures of a man who is not identified as a suspect.

In a statement, Facebook said, "We identified false news in the Crisis Response hub yesterday morning and removed it.

"However, the removal was delayed, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online.

"We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused."

CNN also raised concerns about Google algorithms, with anyone who searched the name of the person wrongly identified as the shooter being linked to websites that included the false claim.

The Top Stories section included a recommended link to a 4chan discussion board that used the wrong name.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said the search engine giant's algorithm was "briefly surfacing an inaccurate 4chan website" for what it said was a "small number of queries."

They added: "Within hours, the 4chan story was algorithmically replaced by relevant results"
